Our Temple buildings and grounds have suffered terrible damage as a result of the September flooding in Boulder, Colorado. A nearby creek overflowed its banks and sent 3-4 feet of water racing through the property. We worked through the first night to remove all the valuable shrine objects, statues, sutra books, and other practice items from the buildings, and fortunately these were all saved. Unfortunately, the interiors of both the hondo and dojo have had to be removed, including tatami mats, floors, carpeting, insulation, and portions of the walls. We hope that with bleach and power washing, we can save the structures themselves.
The garden also suffered tremendous damage, though its basic outline remains intact. The pond is filled with silt and gravel, the pathways have been washed away, and many of the plants are covered with debris.
Our community is small but we have had tremendous support from practitioners. Many have turned out to help clean up efforts and have put in back-breaking work hauling out trash and the destroyed remnants of the buildings. Now, however, we are at a stage when only paid professionals can help us to bring back our Zen center. Donations in any amount are welcome and will be used to help us clean and restore Hakubai. Thank you in advance for your help!
